Splendid and majestic is His work, And His righteousness endures forever.
Psalm 111 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible
Praise the Lord!
I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart,
In the company of
the upright and in the assembly.
2 Great are the works of the Lord;
They are studied by all who delight in them.
3 Splendid and majestic is His work,
And His righteousness endures forever.
4 He has caused His wonders to be remembered;
The Lord is gracious and compassionate.
5 He has given food
to those who fear Him;
He will remember His covenant forever.
6 He has made known to His people the power of His works,
In giving them the inheritance of the nations.
7 The
works of His hands are truth and justice;
All His precepts are trustworthy.
8 They are upheld forever and ever;
They are performed in truth and uprightness.
9 He
has sent redemption to His people;
He has ordained His covenant forever;
Holy and awesome is His name.
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
All those who follow His
commandments have a good understanding;
His praise endures forever.
When we see the events and circumstances unfolding in our nation and around the world, it is easy to believe that we are in the days that Jesus describes in Matthew 24:3-14: And as He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” And Jesus answered and said to them, “See to it that no one misleads you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will mislead many people. And you will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pains. Then they will hand you over to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name. And at that time many will fall away, and they will betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will rise up and mislead many people. And because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will become cold. But the one who endures to the end is the one who will be saved. This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.”
Surely lawlessness is increasing, as it is not only allowed but actually promoted and encouraged. As a result, we see that the love of most people is growing cold. Acts of senseless violence are increasing in our cities, our neighborhoods, workplaces and schools. One state recently voted against legislation that would have required that a baby who survived an abortion would be given medical treatment. We hear of wars and rumors of potential wars every day. The word translated as nations is the Greek word ethnos, from which we get the English word ethnic. These ethnic, racial wars are reaching warlike levels, with the flames of the fire being fanned by media and divisive leaders. We also see that in this country people of conservative values are having their homes invaded by armed government forces, while those who destroy property, vandalize and loot are justified.
Still, we must remember that what is coming is not the end, but rather the end of the age. Revelation 21:1-8 says: Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among the people, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.” Then He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give water to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life, without cost. The one who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son. But for the cowardly, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and sexually immoral persons, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” So, as we see the darkening of our society and culture, we should not fear the end of the age, but rather welcome the age to come when there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain.
With the psalmist then I will say:
Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart, In the company
of the upright and in the assembly. Great are the works of the Lord; They are studied by all who delight in them. Splendid and majestic is His work, And His righteousness endures forever. He has caused His wonders to

He has given food to those who fear Him; He will remember His covenant forever. He has made known to His people the power of His works,
In giving them the inheritance of the nations. The works of His hands are truth and justice; All His precepts are trustworthy. They are upheld forever and ever; They are performed in truth and uprightness. He has sent redemption
to His people; He has ordained His covenant forever; Holy and awesome is His name. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; All those who follow His commandments have a good understanding; His praise endures
forever. Amen.
