It is He who will trample down our enemies
Psalm 108 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible
My heart is steadfast, God;
I will sing, I will sing praises also with my soul.
2 Awake, harp
and lyre;
I will awaken the dawn!
3 I will give thanks to You, Lord, among the peoples,
And I will sing praises to You among the nations.
4 For Your mercy is
great above the heavens,
And Your truth reaches to the skies.
5 Be exalted above the heavens, God,
And may Your glory be above all the earth.
6 So that Your beloved may be rescued,
Save with Your right hand, and answer me!
7 God has spoken in His holiness:
“I will triumph, I will divide
up Shechem,
And measure out the Valley of Succoth.
8 Gilead is Mine, Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim also is the helmet of My head;
Judah is My scepter.
9 Moab
is My washbowl;
I will throw My sandal over Edom;
I will shout aloud over Philistia.”
10 Who will bring me into the fortified city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
11 God,
have You Yourself not rejected us?
And will You not go forth with our armies, God?
12 Give us help against the enemy,
For deliverance by man is worthless.
13 Through
God we will do valiantly,
And it is He who will trample down our enemies.
Although we live in a time filled with uncertainty, we don’t know what will be the course of our nation or the nations of the world. It seems now that as a nation we have moved away from God. Still, with the psalmist I will say: My heart is steadfast, God; I will sing, I will sing praises also with my soul. Awake, harp and lyre; I will awaken the dawn! I will give thanks to You, Lord, among the peoples, And I will sing praises to You among the nations. For Your mercy is great above the heavens, And Your truth reaches to the skies. God is infinite and eternal. He is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. Both His mercy and His truth are over us.
The psalmist says: Be exalted above the heavens, God, And may Your glory be above all the earth. So
that Your beloved may be rescued,
Save with Your right hand, and answer me! God is not God because we say He is. He is God whether we acknowledge Him or not. His glory is above and throughout the earth. Isaiah 6:1-3 says: In the
year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. Seraphim were standing above Him, each having six wings: with two each covered his
face, and with two each covered his feet, and with two each flew. And one called out to another and said, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of armies. The whole earth is full of His glory.” Despite
the darkness that is increasing in the world, from heaven’s perspective the whole earth is filled with God’s glory. Heaven sees from the perspective of eternity.
The psalmist says: Give us help against the enemy, For deliverance by man is worthless. Through God we will do valiantly, And it is He who will trample down our enemies. We will not be delivered by a political party or leader. We will not be delivered by the power of our army. Deliverance by human means is worthless. Our real enemy is not a nation or an evil leader. It is the evil one that they follow and serve, the enemy of our souls. In John 16:33 Jesus says: “These things I have spoken to you so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” On the cross Jesus said: “It is finished!” (John 19:30) He has overcome. He has trampled our enemies.
My heart is steadfast, God; I will sing, I will sing praises also with my soul. Awake, harp and lyre; I will awaken the dawn! I will give thanks to You, Lord, among the peoples, And I will sing praises to You among the nations. For Your mercy is great above the heavens, And Your truth reaches to the skies. Amen.
