There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:1-26 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be unaware. ² You know that when you were pagans, you were led astray to the mute idols, however you were led. ³ Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is accursed”; and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

⁴ Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. ⁵ And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. ⁶ There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. ⁷ But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. ⁸ For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; ⁹ to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, ¹⁰ and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. ¹¹ But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

¹² For just as the body is one and yet has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. ¹³ For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

¹⁴ For the body is not one part, but many. ¹⁵ If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any less a part of the body. ¹⁶ And if the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any less a part of the body. ¹⁷ If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? ¹⁸ But now God has arranged the parts, each one of them in the body, just as He desired. ¹⁹ If they were all one part, where would the body be? ²⁰ But now there are many parts, but one body. ²¹ And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; or again, the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” ²² On the contrary, it is much truer that the parts of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary; ²³ and those parts of the body which we consider less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor, and our less presentable parts become much more presentable, ²⁴ whereas our more presentable parts have no need of it. But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that part which lacked, ²⁵ so that there may be no division in the body, but that the parts may have the same care for one another. ²⁶ And if one part of the body suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if a part is honored, all the parts rejoice with it.

In today’s text it says: Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.  These gifts then are not chosen or appointed by people, they are given by the Holy Spirit, just as He wills. As believers, we all have the same Spirit within us, but there are varieties of gifts and varieties of ministries. To each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. We should not seek to operate in the gift of another person, but rather to know and use the gifts we have been given for the good of others.

Recently we saw that in 1 Corinthians 10:21 it says: You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. In the same way, we cannot expect that we will experience the full manifestations of our spiritual gifts, if we are filled with and yielded to the spirit of the world. If on the other hand we will be fully yielded to the Holy Spirit, then He can work through us manifesting what ever gift is necessary for the common good at that time. We all can have a word of wisdom through the Spirit, or a word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; faith by the same Spirit, and gifts of healing by the one Spirit. We all can effect of miracles, and prophecy, distinguish spirits, and be given various kinds of tongues, or the interpretation of tongues. By His wisdom and grace though, within the body, the Spirit brings unity and balance so that all the gifts are available and active for the common good.

The text says: the body is not one part, but many. If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any less a part of the body. And if the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that part which lacked, so that there may be no division in the body, but that the parts may have the same care for one another. And if one part of the body suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if a part is honored, all the parts rejoice with it.  Again, it is important that we neither covet nor despise the gift of the Spirit of others, but rather seek to be fully yielded to the Spirit ourselves for the common good. In Romans 12:3-13 Paul says: For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. For just as we have many parts in one body and all the body’s parts do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually parts of one another. However, since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to use them properly: if prophecy, in proportion to one’s faith; if service, in the act of serving; or the one who teaches, in the act of teaching; or the one who exhorts, in the work of exhortation; the one who gives, with generosity; the one who is in leadership, with diligence; the one who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Love must be free of hypocrisy. Detest what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor, not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality. The key for us, if we desire more or greater gifts and manifestations of the Spirit to be present and active in our lives, is to yield fully to the Spirit and do all that we do faithfully for the common good.

Thank You heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ and precious Holy Spirit. By Your wisdom and grace, and through Your power, may I be a vessel for the manifestation of Your gifts. May Your kingdom come and Your will be done, both in and through my life. Amen.
