I the Lord search the heart
Psalm 19 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible
The heavens tell of the glory of God;
And their expanse declares the work of His hands.
2 Day
to day pours forth speech,
And night to night reveals knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words;
Their voice is not heard.
4 Their line has
gone out into all the earth,
And their words to the end of the world.
In them He has placed a tent for the sun,
5 Which is like a groom coming out of his chamber;
It rejoices like a strong person
to run his course.
6 Its rising is from one end of the heavens,
And its circuit to the other end of them;
And there is nothing hidden from its heat.
7 The
Law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul;
The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
8 The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing
the heart;
The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the Lord are true; they
are righteous altogether.
10 They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much pure gold;
Sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.
11 Moreover, Your
servant is warned by them;
In keeping them there is great reward.
12 Who can discern his errors? Acquit me of hidden faults.
13 Also
keep Your servant back from presumptuous sins;
Let them not rule over me;
Then I will be innocent,
And I will be blameless of great wrongdoing.
14 May the words of my
mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.
The psalmist says: The heavens tell of the glory of God; And their expanse declares the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words; Their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out into all the earth, And their words to the end of the world. In them He has placed a tent for the sun, Which is like a groom coming out of his chamber; It rejoices like a strong person to run his course. Its rising is from one end of the heavens, And its circuit to the other end of them; And there is nothing hidden from its heat. Just because David, and some of the other writers of scripture did not have a complete understanding of the scientific properties of heaven and earth, does not mean that the Bible is foolishness. Even all these thousands of years later, science cannot fully explain or comprehend the magnitude or the intricacy of creation. If science will be honest, it will admit that each answer it finds, leads to more mysteries it cannot explain. Science, human understanding changes constantly but, in Malachi 3:6 God says: I, the Lord, do not change. David, the writer of this Psalm, was called by God, a man after His own heart. (1 Sam 13:14 Acts 13:22) God is more concerned about our hearts than our scientific knowledge. In Jeremiah 17:10 God says: I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, To give to each person according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds.The heart after God sees creation and credits and worships the creator. The heart that denies God, also denies all the good that God has planned for them.
The psalmist says: The Law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; The
testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is
clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether.
They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much pure gold; Sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, Your
servant is warned by them; In keeping them there is great reward. Who can discern his errors? Acquit me of hidden faults. Also keep Your servant back from presumptuous sins; Let them not rule over me; Then I will be innocent,
And I will be blameless of great wrongdoing. The heart after God does not refute or debate God’s commandments, it understands that they are for our good. In Jeremiah 29:11 God says: I know the plans that I have for
you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for prosperity and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. The heart after God understands that to surrender to God’s
plan holds great reward. God has indeed acquitted us of our hidden faults. On the cross, in Luke 23:34 Jesus said: “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”Yet, the heart after God does not presume
on God’s forgiveness and grace by continuing in sin, rather it surrenders to God’s will and His ways. James 4:5-8 says: He jealously desires the Spirit whom He has made to dwell in us”? But He gives a greater
grace. Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Submit therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God and He will come close to you. Cleanse
your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. In Psalm 51:10-13 David, the psalmist says: Create in me a clean heart, God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away
from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And sustain me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach wrongdoers Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You.
With the psalmist I say: May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. Amen.
