He will guide you into all truth.

Luke 20:27-47 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

Now some of the Sadducees (who maintain that there is no resurrection) came to Him, 28 and they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife, and he is childless, that his brother is to marry the wife and raise up children for his brother. 29 So then, there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless; 30 and the second 31 and the third married her; and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally the woman also died. 33 Therefore, in the resurrection, which one’s wife does the woman become? For all seven married her.”

34 Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and the women are given in marriage, 35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 for they cannot even die anymore, for they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37 But as for the fact that the dead are raised, even Moses revealed this in the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38 Now He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; for all live to Him.” 39 Some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 For they did not have the courage to question Him any longer about anything.

41 But He said to them, “How is it that they say the Christ is David’s son? 42 For David himself says in the book of Psalms,

‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand,
43 Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’

44 Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord,’ and so how is He his son?”

45 And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love personal greetings in the marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, 47 who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive all the more condemnation.”

Jesus taught us to pray saying: “Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” In today’s text it says: Now some of the Sadducees (who maintain that there is no resurrection) came to Him, and they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife, and he is childless, that his brother is to marry the wife and raise up children for his brother. So then, there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless; and the second and the third married her; and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children. Finally the woman also died. Therefore, in the resurrection, which one’s wife does the woman become? For all seven married her.”  Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and the women are given in marriage, but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; for they cannot even die anymore, for they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.” Any time we try to compare, comprehend or limit the eternal and infinite kingdom of heaven to the finite things of earth we misconceive the truth. 1 Corinthians 1:25 says: The foolishness of God is wiser than mankind, and the weakness of God is stronger than mankind.  It is foolishness to limit God by our own finite understanding. It is even more foolish to think that we are greater than God, or that there is no God.

Romans 1:18-22 says: For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their reasonings, and their senseless hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools.  The glory and the magnitude of creation, its intricate details are evidence of the glory of the creator that only a fool could deny. They are only the beginning of the revelation of God though. What is natural cannot explain what is supernatural. What is physical cannot explain or contain what is spiritual. In today’s text Jesus says: “How is it that they say the Christ is David’s son? For David himself says in the book of Psalms, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’ Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord,’ and so how is He his son?”  Jesus natural heritage is traced through David so that God’s eternal word, His promise to David that his sons would remain on the throne forever, would not be broken. It is fulfilled in Christ, who is and was and is to come, who eternally reigns in heaven and on earth. He is the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings. He was David’s Lord and is Lord of all.

In John 4:23-24 Jesus says: “A time is coming, and even now has arrived, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”  We can only fully know and worship God through the Holy Spirit. We also can only know truth by that same Spirit. In John 16:8-15 Jesus says: He, when He comes, will convict the world regarding sin, and righteousness, and judgment: regarding sin, because they do not believe in Me; and regarding righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you no longer are going to see Me; and regarding judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged…  when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take from Mine and will disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; this is why I said that He takes from Mine and will disclose it to you.”

Thank You heavenly Father, for the revelation of Your majesty in creation. Thank You for the revelation of Your love and character in Christ, Your Son. Thank You for all truth, which is disclosed to us by the Spirit. Amen.
