The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”

Psalm 53 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, and have committed abominable injustice;
There is no one who does good.
God has looked down from heaven upon the sons of mankind

To see if there is anyone who understands,
Who seeks after God.
Every one of them has turned aside; together they have become corrupt;
There is no one who does good, not even one.

Have the workers of injustice no knowledge,
Who eat up My people like they ate bread,
And have not called upon God?
They were in great fear there, where no fear had been;

For God scattered the bones of him who encamped against you;
You put them to shame, because God had rejected them.
Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come from Zion!
When God restores the fortunes of His people,
Jacob shall rejoice, Israel shall be glad.

The psalmist rightly declares: The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”  Romans 1:16-32 says:  I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written: “But the righteous one will live by faith.” For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their reasonings, and their senseless hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools… they exchanged the truth of God for falsehood, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions… just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a depraved mind, to do those things that are not proper, people having been filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, and evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unfeeling, and unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also approve of those who practice them.

The psalmist says: They are corrupt, and have committed abominable injustice; There is no one who does good. God has looked down from heaven upon the sons of mankind To see if there is anyone who understands, Who seeks after God. Every one of them has turned aside; together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one.  It is the foolishness of denying that God exists, even in the midst of the evidence of creation, that corrupts. It is recognizing the righteousness of God, yet choosing unrighteousness, being: filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, and evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice; being gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unfeeling, and unmerciful that is evidence of the corruption of godless mankind.

The psalmist says: Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come from Zion!
When God restores the fortunes of His people, Jacob shall rejoice, Israel shall be glad.
 Because no one sought God, John 3:16-17 says: God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him.  God Himself sought to save us. Salvation has indeed come, not only for Israel, but also for everyone that believes in Christ the Savior. God has not only restored our fortunes, He has restored us back to His image and likeness, as He intended at creation. So, it has gone full circle. Those who denied the existence and the righteousness of God, in the midst of the evidence of creation, have been restored to the most glorious part of that very creation. Still, there is a choice each person must make. In John 3:18-21 Jesus says: “The one who believes in Him is not judged; the one who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the Light; for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light, so that his deeds will not be exposed. But the one who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds will be revealed as having been performed in God.”

As we look around the world, we can easily see the evidence of God in the glory, the splendor, the majesty and magnitude of creation. We can see the intricate detail and the perfect balance of nature and the universe. We can also see the evidence of the depravity and evil, of the foolishness of those who reject and deny God, of those who: love the darkness rather than the Light. Only a fool would look at the evidence and say there is no God. 1 Corinthians 1:23-25 says:  We preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block, and to Gentiles foolishness, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than mankind, and the weakness of God is stronger than mankind. Choose wisely.

Thank You heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ and precious Holy Spirit for the evidence of Your glory and majesty revealed in creation. Thank You that even though none sought You, You sent a Savior, one who restores. I believe. Amen.
