The fool has said in his heart, There is no God.
Psalm 53 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible
The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, and have committed
abominable injustice;
There is no one who does good.
2 God has looked down from heaven upon the sons of mankind
To see if there is anyone who understands,
Who seeks after God.
3 Every
one of them has turned aside; together they have become corrupt;
There is no one who does good, not even one.
4 Have the workers of injustice no knowledge,
Who eat up My people like they
ate bread,
And have not called upon God?
5 They were in great fear there, where no fear had been;
For God scattered the bones of him who encamped against
you;
You put them to shame, because God had rejected them.
6 Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come from Zion!
When God restores the fortunes of His
people,
Jacob shall rejoice, Israel shall be glad.
The psalmist says: The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” Many then would qualify as fools. What is even more foolish though is to say out loud that there is no God. In truth, only a fool would see all of creation, its magnitude and splendor, its detail and intricacy and say there is no God. Only a fool would believe that all of creation, the sun the moon, the stars and earth plus everything that lives on earth both plants and animals were the result of a series of accidents and not the result of the hand and the plan of God. Romans 1:19-22 says: That which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their reasonings, and their senseless hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools. Every effort to explain creation without God, is simply rooted in the fact that to acknowledge the God of creation, is to also acknowledge that He should be honored and given thanks. There reasonings are futile. People do not get to decide if there is a God. Their denial of Him is foolishness.
The psalmist says: They are corrupt, and have committed abominable injustice; There is no one who does good. God has looked down from heaven upon the sons of mankind To see if there is anyone who understands, Who seeks after God. Every one of them has turned aside; together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one. God’s plan and His intention was for us to be in fellowship with Him, that we would do good and to be obedient to His commands. Because of our fallen nature, our disobedience and corruption, God had a plan to redeem us from our corrupt nature, to restore us to His intended design. In the beginning we were created in His image and likeness. (Genesis 1:26) That is the result of Jesus sacrifice on the cross for our sins, we are restored to the image and likeness of God. Like Adam and Eve who hid from God after they sinned, none of us sought God, He sought us through the sacrifice of Christ, His Son.
The
Psalmist says: Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come from Zion!
When God restores the fortunes of His people, Jacob shall rejoice, Israel shall be glad. He looked forward in faith to the day of the Savior.
We look back with faith and confidence. Salvation has come. On the cross Jesus said: “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34) “It is finished!”
(John 19:30) Today Jesus is saying: “Those whom I love, I rebuke and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and
will dine with him, and he with Me. The one who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat with My Father on His throne. The one who has an ear, let him hear what the
Spirit says to the churches.’” (Revelation 3:19-22)
Thank You heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ, my Savior and Redeemer and precious Holy Spirit, You are God. You sought me when I was lost. I will rejoice and be glad. Amen.
