Contend, Lord, with those who contend with me
Psalm 35 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible
Contend, Lord, with those who contend with me;
Fight against those who fight against me.
2 Take hold
of buckler and shield
And rise up as my help.
3 Draw also the spear and the battle-axe to meet those who pursue me;
Say to my soul, “I am your salvation.”
4 Let
those be ashamed and dishonored who seek my life;
Let those be turned back and humiliated who devise evil against me.
5 Let them be like chaff before the wind,
With the angel of the Lord driving them on.
6 Let their way be dark and slippery,
With the angel of the Lord pursuing them.
7 For they hid their net for me without cause;
Without cause they
dug a pit for my soul.
8 Let destruction come upon him when he is unaware,
And let the net which he hid catch him;
Let him fall into that very destruction.
9 So
my soul shall rejoice in the Lord;
It shall rejoice in His salvation.
10 All my bones will say, “Lord, who is like You,
Who rescues the afflicted from one who is too strong
for him,
And the afflicted and the poor from one who robs him?”
11 Malicious witnesses rise up;
They ask me things that I do not know.
12 They repay me
evil for good,
To the bereavement of my soul.
13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth;
I humbled my soul with fasting,
But my prayer kept returning
to me.
14 I went about as though it were my friend or brother;
I bowed down in mourning, like one who mourns for a mother.
15 But at my stumbling they
rejoiced and gathered themselves together;
The afflicted people whom I did not know gathered together against me,
They slandered me without ceasing.
16 Like godless jesters at a feast,
They gnashed
at me with their teeth.
17 Lord, how long will You look on?
Rescue my soul from their ravages,
My only life from the lions.
18 I
will give You thanks in the great congregation;
I will praise You among a mighty people.
19 Do not let those who are wrongfully my enemies rejoice over me;
Nor let those who hate me for
no reason wink maliciously.
20 For they do not speak peace,
But they devise deceitful words against those who are quiet in the land.
21 They opened their mouth
wide against me;
They said, “Aha, aha! Our eyes have seen it!”
22 You have seen it, Lord, do not keep silent;
Lord, do not be far from me.
23 Stir
Yourself, and awake to my right
And to my cause, my God and my Lord.
24 Judge me, Lord my God, according to Your righteousness,
And do not let them rejoice over me.
25 Do
not let them say in their heart, “Aha, our desire!”
Do not let them say, “We have swallowed him up!”
26 May those be ashamed and altogether humiliated who rejoice at my distress;
May those who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and dishonor.
27 May those shout for joy and rejoice, who take delight in my vindication;
And may they say continually,
“The Lord be exalted,
Who delights in the prosperity of His servant.”
28 And my tongue shall proclaim Your righteousness
And Your praise all day long.
The psalmist says: Contend, Lord, with those who contend with me; Fight against those who fight against me. Take hold of buckler and shield And rise up as my help. Draw also the spear and the battle-axe to meet those who pursue me; Say to my soul, “I am your salvation.” Ephesians 6:12 says: Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Colossians 2:13-15 says: He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our wrongdoings, having canceled the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him. The Lord has already contended with our enemies. He has disarmed and defeated them through the cross. In John 19:30, on the cross, He said: “It is finished!” In John 16:33 Jesus says: “These things I have spoken to you so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” He has not only contended with our enemies, He has overcome. Romans 8:31;35-39 says: If God is for us, who is against us?... Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or trouble, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. We still must contend with trouble, tribulation and persecution, in the world, but Christ has already contended and conquered them through the cross. We fight a defeated enemy.
The psalmist says: I will give You thanks in the great congregation; I will praise You among a mighty people. Do not let those who are wrongfully my enemies rejoice over me; Nor let those who hate me for no reason wink maliciously. For they do not speak peace, But they devise deceitful words against those who are quiet in the land. They opened their mouth wide against me; They said, “Aha, aha! Our eyes have seen it!” You have seen it, Lord, do not keep silent; Lord, do not be far from me. Stir Yourself, and awake to my right And to my cause, my God and my Lord. Judge me, Lord my God, according to Your righteousness, And do not let them rejoice over me. Do not let them say in their heart, “Aha, our desire!” Do not let them say, “We have swallowed him up!” May those be ashamed and altogether humiliated who rejoice at my distress; May those who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and dishonor. We are not only judged according to God’s righteousness, but 2 Corinthians 5:21 says: He made Him who knew no sin to be sin in our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Again, If God is for us, who can be against us? Hebrews 13:5-6 says: Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever abandon you,” so that we confidently say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?” We need not fear the trouble and tribulation of the world or the persecution of people, because Jesus has overcome the world. Jesus endured persecution on the cross and died, but through the resurrection we live as those who have overcome with Him. Psalm 23:4 says: Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me. Even death, the worst that any person could do to us, has no power over us, because in Christ we have eternal life.
May those shout for joy and rejoice, who take delight in my vindication; And may they say continually, “The Lord be exalted, Who delights in the prosperity of His servant.” And my tongue shall proclaim Your righteousness And Your praise all day long. Amen.
