Therefore encourage one another and build up one another

1 Thessalonians 5:4-28 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.

12 But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction, 13 and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Live in peace with one another. 14 We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. 16 Rejoice always; 17 pray without ceasing; 18 in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not quench the Spirit; 20 do not despise prophetic utterances. 21 But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; 22 abstain from every form of evil.

23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.

25 Brethren, pray for us.

26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. 27 I adjure you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the brethren.

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

In Matthew 7:1-2 Jesus says: “Do not judge so that you will not be judged.  For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.”  In today’s text it says:   Live in peace with one another. We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone.  If we are not to judge others, how is it that we are to admonish the unruly? First, we need to look at the entire statement that Jesus made. In verses 3-5 He says:  Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.” We should view others through eyes of grace, recognizing that we have been forgiven. We don’t condemn them, but rather in grace, we patiently admonish, encourage and help them to see clearly.

The text continues:  See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people.  Romans 12:21 says:  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. In Matthew 5:38-45 Jesus says:  “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you. You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”  Not only does God cause the sun to rise on the evil and the good, but He gave His Son so that whoever believes in Him will not perish. If we see others through eyes of grace, then even in the midst of their actions against us, we will pray what Jesus prayed on the cross, “Father forgive them they do not know what they are doing.” If we will truly seek what is good for all people, we will seek that they would come to know the love of God demonstrated in the cross of Jesus.

The text continues:  Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.  Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances.  But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil.  The best way, perhaps the only way that we can truly hold fast to what is good and abstain from every form of evil is if we will rejoice always: pray without ceasing and in everything give thanks. If we will focus on God and His goodness, we will not even consider what is evil. Psalm 37:4 says: Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart. When we rejoice in the Lord, give thanks and pray, our will becomes aligned with His will.

The text says:  You, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; for you are all sons of light and sons of day. For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.  In John 9:4-5 Jesus says:  We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.”  He didn’t say that He must do the works. He said we must do the works. In Matthew 5:14-16 Jesus says “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”    Be encouraged therefore, as long as we are in the world, we are to be the light of Christ to the world. As long as He gives us another day, we must do the works of Him who sent Jesus for us.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
