A natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God
1 Corinthians 2:6-3:4 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible
Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; 7 but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; 8 the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; 9 but just as it is written,
“Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the heart of man,
All that
God has prepared for those who love Him.”
10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, 13 which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.
14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. 15 But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. 16 For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.
3 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, 3 for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men? 4 For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not mere men?
In yesterday’s text Paul said that the foolishness of God is better than the wisdom of man. Today’s text sheds some light on how and why that is. It says: A natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ. It is not a matter of I. Q. It is not a matter of education. A person simply cannot fully comprehend spiritual things and spiritual truth, apart from the Spirit. In John 4:24 Jesus says: "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." It should not surprise us then that unbelievers, those who do not have the Spirit of God, think that we are foolish for our belief. The degree to which an unbeliever can comprehend spiritual matters could be compared to a person listening to a speech in an unknown language. To comprehend God who is spiritual through human knowledge and understanding, is like seeing a picture of a beautiful flower garden in black and white. Without the Spirit, there is no vibrancy, no depth and no distinguishing of detail.
The text says: Just as it is written, “Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, And which have not entered the heart of man, All that God has prepared for those who love Him.” For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. In John 14:26 Jesus describes the role of the Holy Spirit, who we receive when we believe in Christ by faith (without full understanding). In the Amplified translation it says: The Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you. If a person must believe first, before they can have the understanding that comes by the Spirit, how will they believe. In Romans 10:8-15 it says: “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.” … “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!” As believers we are not responsible for the comprehension or the lack of it in those who do not believe. In John 16:7-8 Jesus says: “I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.” The Holy Spirit is the one who is responsible for the response of those who hear the truth. Whether they will respond in faith to the conviction of the Holy Spirit is their choice. We have though bent sent. In Mark 16:15-16 Jesus says: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.” In Acts 1:8 Jesus says: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ; precious Holy Spirit thank You for giving us a capacity to believe without understanding, so that by faith we may receive the power, the wisdom and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. May I, by my life and my testimony bring the Good News to others. Amen.
