“Lovingkindness will be built up forever; In the heavens You will establish Your faithfulness.”

Psalm 89:1-13 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

I will sing of the lovingkindness of the Lord forever;
To all generations I will make known Your faithfulness with my mouth.
For I have said, “Lovingkindness will be built up forever;
In the heavens You will establish Your faithfulness.”
“I have made a covenant with My chosen;
I have sworn to David My servant,
I will establish your seed forever
And build up your throne to all generations.” Selah.

The heavens will praise Your wonders, O Lord;
Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones.
For who in the skies is comparable to the Lord?
Who among the sons of the mighty is like the Lord,
A God greatly feared in the council of the holy ones,
And awesome above all those who are around Him?
O Lord God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty Lord?
Your faithfulness also surrounds You.
You rule the swelling of the sea;
When its waves rise, You still them.
10 You Yourself crushed Rahab like one who is slain;
You scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm.

11 The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours;
The world and all it contains, You have founded them.
12 The north and the south, You have created them;
Tabor and Hermon shout for joy at Your name.
13 You have a strong arm;
Your hand is mighty, Your right hand is exalted.

In today’s text the psalmist says:  I will sing of the lovingkindness of the Lord forever; To all generations I will make known Your faithfulness with my mouth. For I have said, “Lovingkindness will be built up forever; In the heavens You will establish Your faithfulness.”   In Isaiah 55:8-11 God says:  “My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, And do not return there without watering the earth And making it bear and sprout, And furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.”  There is a song that was made popular in the Orphan Annie production, which says:  The sun'll come out Tomorrow Bet your bottom dollar That tomorrow There'll be sun!”  God’s faithfulness is not only established in the heavens, it is also demonstrated and made apparent there. Just as we can count on the sun rise and sunset, knowing to the precise minute when it will occur; just as we can depend on the phases of the moon and the appearance of the stars and the planets in the night time sky, so too can we count on the loving kindness and faithfulness of God. James 1:17 says:  Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. In view of this, because of God’s love, kindness and faithfulness, the psalmist says:  I will sing of the lovingkindness of the Lord forever; To all generations I will make known Your faithfulness with my mouth.  Romans 1:19-21, on the other hand says:  That which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.  We then, have a choice, in light of the evidence of God’s love, kindness and faithfulness will we, like the psalmist, praise Him; will we make known His faithfulness to all generations? Or will we, even though we know God, not honor Him and give thanks?

The psalmist says:  The heavens will praise Your wonders, O Lord; Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones. For who in the skies is comparable to the Lord? Who among the sons of the mighty is like the Lord,  A God greatly feared in the council of the holy ones, And awesome above all those who are around Him? O Lord God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty Lord? Your faithfulness also surrounds You.  You rule the swelling of the sea; When its waves rise, You still them.  You Yourself crushed Rahab like one who is slain; You scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm.  God is omnipotent, all powerful. He is omniscient, all knowing. He is omnipresent, everywhere. God is eternal, not limited to finite time as we are. He is infinite, not restricted by the limitations of space.  There truly is no one or nothing that can compare to our God. He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords; the Almighty. He is that whether or not we who are mortal fully comprehend or acknowledge it.

The psalmist says:  The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; The world and all it contains, You have founded them.  The north and the south, You have created them; Tabor and Hermon shout for joy at Your name.  You have a strong arm; Your hand is mighty, Your right hand is exalted.  Surely we face difficult times. The world has been attacked and affected by an unseen enemy. We don’t know for certain whether the steps that politicians and doctors have taken will lead to a sure victory or a different defeat. It is difficult to trust in the wisdom of man because with man truth is not truth, but rather the current opinion of the one who is speaking.  2 Corinthians 1:19-20 says:  The Son of God, Jesus Christ,—was not Yes and No, but in Him was Yes. For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.  With God, truth is unchanging. It is not subject to the whims of man, but rather, like His love and faithfulness, is established forever.

May Psalm 20:4-9 be our declaration and prayer:  May He grant you your heart’s desire And fulfill all your counsel!We will sing for joy over your victory, And in the name of our God we will set up our banners. May the Lord fulfill all your petitions. Now I know that the Lord saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven With the saving strength of His right hand. Some boast in chariots and some in horses, But we will boast in the name of the Lord, our God. They have bowed down and fallen, But we have risen and stood upright.Save, O Lord; May the King answer us in the day we call; and so: I will sing of the lovingkindness of the Lord forever; To all generations I will make known Your faithfulness with my mouth. For I have said, “Lovingkindness will be built up forever; In the heavens You will establish Your faithfulness.  Amen.
