Will they not both fall into a pit?

Luke 6:39-7:10 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

And He also spoke a parable to them: “A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit? ⁴⁰ A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. ⁴¹ Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? ⁴² Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye. ⁴³ For there is no good tree which produces bad fruit, nor, on the other hand, a bad tree which produces good fruit. ⁴⁴ For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush. ⁴⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.

⁴⁶ “Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? ⁴⁷ Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: ⁴⁸ he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the ^[h]torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. ⁴⁹ But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”

7 When He had completed all His discourse in the hearing of the people, He went to Capernaum.

² And a centurion’s slave, who was highly regarded by him, was sick and about to die. ³ When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders asking Him to come and save the life of his slave. ⁴ When they came to Jesus, they earnestly implored Him, saying, “He is worthy for You to grant this to him; ⁵ for he loves our nation and it was he who built us our synagogue.” ⁶ Now Jesus started on His way with them; and when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself further, for I am not worthy for You to come under my roof; ⁷ for this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed. ⁸ For I also am a man placed under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” ⁹ Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled at him, and turned and said to the crowd that was following Him, “I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.” ¹⁰ When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

In today’s text Jesus says:   “A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit?”  It is ironic how many people there are who will give advice and counsel regarding the Bible, even though they themselves have not read or studied it. They quote out of context; they lecture regarding a few “pet” verses that conveniently support their agenda, but not knowing the whole of scripture they are blind. 2 Timothy 3:16 says:  All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.  There are two parts of that which are important to consider.  First, it says all, not every scripture. So it is the entirety of scripture, from Genesis to Revelation, that we should know and understand. We should view every verse, not as it stands alone, but in the context of the whole. The second thing is that scripture is:  profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.  The purpose of all scripture is to train in righteousness; to teach, reprove and correct. There is no scripture that has as its purpose giving license to sin. Anyone who attempts to manipulate scripture for that purpose is blind and will lead others who follow into a pit.   In Matthew 13:15 Jesus says:  ‘For the heart of this people has become dull, With their ears they scarcely hear, And they have closed their eyes, Otherwise they would see with their eyes, Hear with their ears, And understand with their heart and return, And I would heal them.’    We are encouraged to see, hear and understand what all of scripture says so that we turn or return to God and are healed and made whole.

In the text Jesus says:  “Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?  Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like:  he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”   There are many who call Jesus Lord, and do not do what He says.  In John 14:15;21-24 Jesus says:  “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments… He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him…  If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.  He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.”    Loving Jesus is inseparable with keeping His commandments.   In these difficult times we are in it is vital that we truly love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul and mind. Jesus is the rock and foundation on which are live must be built if we will withstand the flood and the torrent of things which will come. If we keep the word of God, particularly in this time when God’s word stands apart from the ways and the will of our society and culture, then Jesus says:  My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.  Romans 8:31-39 says:   What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?  He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? … In all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,  nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Thank You heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ and precious Holy Spirit, that You have given me eyes to see, ears to hear and a heart and mind to understand and believe Your word. Thank You that from Genesis to Revelation Your word is profiable to me for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.  I stand on Your word as the rock of my foundation, knowing that You stand with me. Come what may, nothing can separate me from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus my Lord. Amen.
