You have magnified Your word according to all Your name.
Psalm 138 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible
I will give You thanks with all my heart;
I will sing praises to You before the gods.
2 I will bow down toward
Your holy temple
And give thanks to Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your truth;
For You have magnified Your word according to all Your name.
3 On the day I called, You answered
me;
You made me bold with strength in my soul.
4 All the kings of the earth will give thanks to You, O Lord,
When they have heard the words of Your mouth.
5 And
they will sing of the ways of the Lord,
For great is the glory of the Lord.
6 For though the Lord is exalted,
Yet He regards the lowly,
But the haughty He
knows from afar.
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me;
You will stretch forth Your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
And Your right hand will save me.
8 The Lord will accomplish what concerns me;
Your lovingkindness, O Lord, is everlasting;
Do not forsake the works of Your hands.
The psalmist begins saying: I will give You thanks with all my heart; I will sing praises to You before the gods. I will bow down toward Your holy temple And give thanks to Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your truth; For You have magnified Your word according to all Your name. There are many names for God in scripture. The names describe the attributes of God. When we know who God is, and what His attributes are, He can and will magnify His word and His promises according to His name and His many attributes.
He is: El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty) He created the heavens and the earth so there is nothing more powerful than Him. We have confidence then, knowing that as Romans 8:31 says: If God is for us, who can be against us?
God is: El Elyon (The Most High God) Isaiah 55:8-9 says: “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.” We may not always understand what God is doing, but we can always trust Him. Jeremiah 29:11 says: “I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
God is: Adonai (Lord, Master) He is Lord and Master whether we make Him our Lord or not. In Matthew 11:29-30 Jesus says: “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Things will be better and go easier for us when we submit to His Lordship in our lives. He is: Yahweh (Lord, Jehovah)
God is: Jehovah Nissi (The Lord My Banner) In times of trouble He is a banner over us. We can run to Him for protection and provision.
He is: Jehovah
Raah (The Lord My Shepherd) The promises, protection and provision of the shepherd are captured in the words of Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me
lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my
enemies; You have anointed my head with oil;
My cup overflows. Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. In John 10:11
Jesus says: “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.”
God is: Jehovah Rapha (The
Lord That Heals) Isaiah 53:5 says: But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are
healed. Luke 4:40 says: While the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and laying His hands on each one of them, He was healing them.
God is: Jehovah Shammah (The Lord Is There) He is omnipresent; everywhere.
He is: Jehovah Tsidkenu (The Lord Our Righteousness) We are given the righteousness of Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says: He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. God is: Jehovah Mekoddishkem (The Lord Who Sanctifies You)
He is: El Olam (The Everlasting God) God is eternal, and so His promises to us and for us are also everlasting; without end.
God is: Jehovah Jireh (The Lord Will Provide) Philippians 4:19 says: My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. In Matthew 6:33 Jesus says: “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” In Psalm 37:4 the psalmist says: Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart.
God is: Jehovah Shalom (The Lord Is Peace) In John 14:27 Jesus says: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” In John 16:33 He says: “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
God is: Jehovah Sabaoth (The Lord of Hosts) This can also be translated Lord of the Armies. He is a conquering king. The Lord of Lords and the King of Kings. Nothing or no one can stand against Him. In Matthew 26:53, Jesus when He was arrested said: “Do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?” Psalm 01:11-12 says: For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone. All of The Host of Heaven, at the command of the Lord of Host watch over us.
With the psalmist then we can say: I will give You
thanks with all my heart;
I will sing praises to You before the gods. I will bow down toward Your holy temple And give thanks to Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your truth;
For You have magnified Your word according to all Your name. On the day I called, You answered me; You made me bold with strength in my soul… Though I walk in the
midst of trouble, You will revive me;
You will stretch forth Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, And Your right hand will save me. The Lord will accomplish what
concerns me; Your lovingkindness, O Lord, is everlasting; Do not forsake the works of Your hands. Amen. Magnify Your word according to Your name for every circumstance I face today. Amen.
