If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie

1 John 1 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life— and the life was manifested, and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us— what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. These things we write, so that our joy may be made complete.

This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.

In John 1:1-14 John testifies of Jesus saying:  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.  He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.  And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.   That it says:  The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it, is explained by what Jesus says in John 3:17-21:  God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”   That which is darkness cannot comprehend the light because it/they love darkness. Because they love darkness, they call darkness light; they call what is evil good.

In today’s text it says:   What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life— and the life was manifested, and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us— what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. These things we write, so that our joy may be made complete.  John is again testifying of Jesus, whom He saw, heard and touched. John was a witness of the life and ministry of Jesus and He testifies so that we may share in the fellowship of the Father and Jesus His Son.  He says:  This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.  Those who say there is no sin, whether they say it is because they say there is no God or because we live under grace, make God a liar. His word, from Genesis to Revelation reveals that we are sinners in need of a Savior and Redeemer.  Romans 3:23-24 says:  For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus.   All we need to do is to confess our sin, then He is faithful to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. We cannot though, having been cleansed of unrighteousness, choose again to continue in sin because of grace.  If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.   We cannot claim justification by grace if we refuse the sanctification that is ours by that same grace.  In Matthew 5:17-20 Jesus says:  “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”    Grace does not do away with the consequences of sin and unrighteousness. We cannot, claiming grace, relax the commandments of God and think that we will enter and inherit the kingdom of God.

God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.  In Matthew 5:14-16 Jesus says:  “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;  nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”  If we walk in the light, we will also walk as light in the darkness. If our light, the light of Christ, shines in us and through us, we cannot embrace the darkness of the world. Light dispels darkness. If we embrace darkness, we hide the light of Christ and darkness will overcome us. Romans 12:21 says:  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.   By grace, in righteousness we overcome because Christ has overcome for us.

Thank You heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ and precious Holy Spirit; may I walk in the light, cleansed from all unrighteousness by the precious gift of Your grace.  Amen.
