We were eyewitnesses of His majesty.
2 Peter 1 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible
Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ: 2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; 3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. 4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. 5 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, 6 and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, 7 and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins. 10 Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; 11 for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.
12 Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you. 13 I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15 And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind.
16 For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased”— 18 and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
19 So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. 20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
In today’s text Peter says: We did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased”— and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. I will always defer to the words and opinions of those who were with Jesus; who witnessed His majesty; those whom He fellowshipped with, taught and discipled, rather than those who today believe that they have a better understanding of what Jesus would do or say regarding sin. Peter says: …you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. We cannot, as some would say, choose which of these qualities we walk in and still say we are partakers of the divine nature of God. Peter says: For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins. We are not only forgiven for our sins, but we are purified from them. We need to have moral excellence and self-control, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. We cannot say we have escaped the corruption of the world if we tolorate, embrace or participate in its lust. Peter says that to be fruitful, we must walk in godliness.
In Galatians 5:16-25 Paul says: Walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Many today want to experience and walk in the power of the Holy Spirit while they continue in the deeds of the flesh. They say because we live under grace, sin no longer has any consequences. Paul says: If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. The Spirit of God is one with God, and so is always in unity and agreement with God. We cannot say we are walking in the Spirit, inheriting the kingdom, the promises and the power of God, if we walk in opposition to Him. James, who also walked with Jesus, says in James 4:4: You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
Peter says: We have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. Many today claim to speak what God is saying today, but they actually speak their own interpretation and their own will. Hebrews 13:8, written by one who walked in Jesus day, says: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Those who say Christ has changed, that God is saying something new and different today than what He said in the past, speak their own opinion. For myself I will rely on and defer to what those who were witnesses of the majesty, the miracles and the words of Jesus say.
Thank You heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ and precious Holy Spirit for scripture, Your word written by those who experienced Your majesty. Thank You for the witness of the Holy Spirit who still speaks to us and through us today. Thank You that You are the same yesterday, today and forever; that I am not only forgiven, but also purified to live and walk in the fruit and the power of the Spirit having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. Amen.
