A good understanding have all those who do His commandments.

Psalm 111 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

The Lord Praised for His Goodness.

Praise the Lord!
I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart,
In the company of the upright and in the assembly.
Great are the works of the Lord;
They are studied by all who delight in them.
Splendid and majestic is His work,
And His righteousness endures forever.
He has made His wonders to be remembered;
The Lord is gracious and compassionate.
He has given food to those who fear Him;
He will remember His covenant forever.
He has made known to His people the power of His works,
In giving them the heritage of the nations.

The works of His hands are truth and justice;
All His precepts are sure.
They are upheld forever and ever;
They are performed in truth and uprightness.
He has sent redemption to His people;
He has ordained His covenant forever;
Holy and awesome is His name.
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
A good understanding have all those who do His commandments;
His praise endures forever.

Romans 1:20-23 says:  Since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools,  and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.  The psalmist says:  Great are the works of the Lord; They are studied by all who delight in them.  Splendid and majestic is His work, And His righteousness endures forever.  He has made His wonders to be remembered.    Creation is splendid and majestic and testifies of God’s greatness. It is impossible for a person to truly look at the splendor and majesty, the magnitude and intricacy of creation and not recognize that there must be a creator. When a person looks at a beautiful painting or sculpture, when they see the detail of its design, they do not consider that it may have happened by chance. They give credit and honor to the artist; the creator.  How much more when we see the beauty and the detail of creation should we honor God, the creator? If we will study His works, God’s majesty will continually be revealed. To speculate that everything we see is the result of a random series of accidents is perhaps the ultimate foolishness.  The psalmist says:  He has made His wonders to be remembered.  Every day as we view the beauty, the splendor and the majesty of creation, we should remember and honor God, the creator.

The psalmist continues saying:   The Lord is gracious and compassionate.
He has given food to those who fear Him; He will remember His covenant forever.
 He has made known to His people the power of His works, In giving them the heritage of the nations. The works of His hands are truth and justice; All His precepts are sure. They are upheld forever and ever; They are performed in truth and uprightness. He has sent redemption to His people; He has ordained His covenant forever; Holy and awesome is His name.   James 1:17 says:  Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.  In Matthew 6:26-33 Jesus says:  Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.   God is the creator of all things and He is gracious and compassionate; to provide us with everything we need. Rather than seeking after things, we should seek His kingdom and His enduring righteousness. Along with all of creation, the works of His hands are truth and justice; All His precepts are sure.   He has sent redemption to His people; He has ordained His covenant forever; Holy and awesome is His name.  God’s covenant, all of His promises; His provision and our redemption is in Christ His Son, whom He sent. Romans 5:8 says:  God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  In Christ we are given a new heritage as sons and daughters of God, the creator. We are heirs of all that He has.

The psalmist says:  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
A good understanding have all those who do His commandments.
   While people may aquire knowledge and human understanding through education, those who neither acknowledge nor fear the Lord have no wisdom, because wisdom begins with God. It is not only wisdom and true knowledge that come to those who do God’s commandments, but to have a good understanding, is to have a solid foundation under us, on which we stand. There is a traditional hymn which says:

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly trust in Jesus' Name.

Refrain

On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness seems to hide His face,
I rest on His unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.

Refrain

His oath, His covenant, His blood,
Support me in the whelming flood.
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my Hope and Stay.

Refrain

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh may I then in Him be found.
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.

Refrain

The psalmist says:   His praise endures forever. Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart.    I say Amen. Thank You heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ and precious Holy Spirit. Amen.
