Psalm 108 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

God Praised and Supplicated to Give Victory.

My heart is steadfast, O God;
I will sing, I will sing praises, even with my ^[a]soul.
² Awake, harp and lyre;
I will awaken the dawn!
³ I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples,
And I will sing praises to You among the nations.
⁴ For Your lovingkindness is great above the heavens,
And Your truth reaches to the skies.
⁵ Be exalted, O God, above the heavens,
And Your glory above all the earth.
⁶ That Your beloved may be delivered,
Save with Your right hand, and answer me!

⁷ God has spoken in His holiness:
“I will exult, I will portion out Shechem
And measure out the valley of Succoth.
⁸ “Gilead is Mine, Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim also is the helmet of My head;
Judah is My scepter.
⁹ “Moab is My washbowl;
Over Edom I shall throw My shoe;
Over Philistia I will shout aloud.”

¹⁰ Who will bring me into the besieged city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
¹¹ Have not You Yourself, O God, rejected us?
And will You not go forth with our armies, O God?
¹² Oh give us help against the adversary,
For deliverance by man is in vain.
¹³ Through God we will do valiantly,
And it is He who shall tread down our adversaries.

Romans 16:20 says:  The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.  Frequently in the Old Testament God is referred to as Lord of Hosts, which translates to God of the armies. God is a God of peace but He also commands the armies of heaven to wage war against Satan. In 2 Kings 6:16, when Elisha was surrounded by enemy armies, he said to his servant, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” God is not only the omnipotent, all powerful God who fights for us, He also has more warriors in His army than satan has in his.  In today’s Psalm, the psalmist says:  Oh give us help against the adversary, For deliverance by man is in vain.  Through God we will do valiantly, And it is He who shall tread down our adversaries.  Romans 6:12 says:  Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.   In the spiritual battles that we face, deliverance by man is in vain.  God is the God of peace to those who love Him. In John 14:27 Jesus says:  Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. In John 16:33 Jesus says:  These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.  We have peace because God fights our battles for us and Jesus has already secured the victory.  Philippians 4:7 says:  The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.    Regardless of the situation, no matter what the difficulty or tribulation, in Christ we have a peace unlike anything that the world can provide because He has already overcome.   

Romans 8:31-39 says:  What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? … In all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Because the Lord is for us, and He, who has already won the victory, fights our battles, we, like the psalmist can say: My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing, I will sing praises, even with my soul. Thank You heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ and precious Holy Spirit for Your peace which surpasses all understanding, the peace that I have while You fight my battles.  Amen.
