To be content in whatever circumstances

Philippians 4 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

Therefore, my beloved brethren whom I long to see, my joy and crown, in this way stand firm in the Lord, my beloved.

I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to live in harmony in the Lord. Indeed, true companion, I ask you also to help these women who have shared my struggle in the cause of the gospel, together with Clement also and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned before, but you lacked opportunity. 11 Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. 12 I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. 13 I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. 14 Nevertheless, you have done well to share with me in my affliction.

15 You yourselves also know, Philippians, that at the first preaching of the gospel, after I left Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving but you alone; 16 for even in Thessalonica you sent a gift more than once for my needs. 17 Not that I seek the gift itself, but I seek for the profit which increases to your account. 18 But I have received everything in full and have an abundance; I am amply supplied, having received from Epaphroditus what you have sent, a fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God. 19 And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. 20 Now to our God and Father be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren who are with me greet you. 22 All the saints greet you, especially those of Caesar’s household.

23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

In today’s text Paul exhorts us saying:  Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.   The key to having the peace of God, even in the most difficult circumstances is to rejoice in the Lord. We don’t rejoice for the difficult and hard things, but rather in the difficult and hard things we rejoice in the Lord. In Psalm 37:1-9 the psalmist says:  Do not fret because of evildoers, Be not envious toward wrongdoers. For they will wither quickly like the grass And fade like the green herb. Trust in the Lord and do good;
Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, and He will do it. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light And your judgment as the noonday. Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes. Cease from anger and forsake wrath; Do not fret; it leads only to evildoing. For evildoers will be cut off, But those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land.
  When we recognize that God is near and then we delight in Him, our hearts become aligned with His. We need not worry because God knows all that we need and He will provide for us when we commit our way to Him. Knowing that what we ask for from God is the very thing that He already wants to give us, we can make our request with thanksgiving and praise. Peace is not just something that God gives us; it is part of His very character. He is Jehovah Shalom, the God of Peace. In John 14:27 Jesus says:  Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.  To know Jesus is to know peace. When we have the peace of God in the midst of the trouble and turmoil of the world it is beyond the comprehension of those who do not know God.

Paul says:  Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.  Rather than finally, perhaps it should say first. When we focus on evil and darkness we empower those very things. Light dispels darkness. When we dwell in the light and on the light; when we focus on what is good and what is God, the darkness flees. James 4:7-8 says: Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.   In Matthew 6:33-34 Jesus says:  Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Paul says:  I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me…   I have received everything in full and have an abundance; I am amply supplied… and  my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.  A key to our own contentment and peace is that we should, like Paul, learn to be content in whatever circumstances we are in. As the psalmist says when we delight in the Lord He will give us the desires of our heart. He will supply all of our need. He does not give us the things we lust for, but we are amply supplied when we recognize that we can do all things through Him who strengthens us.

Now to our God and Father be the glory forever and ever. Amen. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.  Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ; precious Holy Spirit, I delight in You. Thank You for Your peace in every circumstance. Holy Spirit help me to dwell on and in all that is good. My trust and my contentment is in You.  Amen.
