He spoke, and it was done
Psalm 33:1-11 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible
Praise to the Creator and Preserver.
Sing for joy in the Lord, O you righteous ones;
Praise is becoming to the upright.
2 Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre;
Sing praises to Him with a harp of ten strings.
3 Sing to Him a new song;
Play skillfully with a shout
of joy.
4 For the word of the Lord is upright,
And all His work is done in faithfulness.
5 He loves righteousness and justice;
The earth
is full of the lovingkindness of the Lord.
6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
And by the breath of His mouth all their host.
7 He
gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap;
He lays up the deeps in storehouses.
8 Let all the earth fear the Lord;
Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.
9 For He spoke, and it was done;
He commanded, and it stood fast.
10 The Lord nullifies the counsel of the nations;
He frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11 The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
The plans of His heart from generation to generation.
The psalmist says: By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And by the breath of His mouth all their host. He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap; He lays up the deeps in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spoke, and it was done. Believing that God is the God of creation is foundational to everything else we believe. Those who choose not to believe and obey God must choose an alternate explanation for all that exists apart from creation. They must choose to believe that we are the result of a series of incidents and accidents; that apart from the hand of an omnipotent and loving God, something was wrought from nothing. Everything else we see; everything else that we can touch, we know that what is did not just become from nothing. Yet those who choose not to believe in creation deny what is obvious. The psalmist says: The word of the Lord is upright, And all His work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; The earth is full of the lovingkindness of the Lord. In the creation account in Genesis, when God created things it says: God saw that it was good. Creation is an expression of the goodness and the lovingkindness of God. It is the essence of His very character. In Isaiah 6:1-3, when Isaiah saw a vision of the throne of God, it says: In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called out to another and said, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory.” When we look at earth from the perspective of heaven, we too will see the glory of God revealed in all of creation. What hope is there for the one who explains their very existence as being the result of an accident? The psalmist says: All His work is done in faithfulness. We are not here by accident.
It is the faithfulness of God that we respond
to in faith. It is the love of God that is the source of our ability and capacity to love. 1 John 4:19 says: We love, because He first loved us. It is our response to God’s love and faithfulness; to His righteousness and justice,
that leads us to join the psalmist when he says: Sing for joy in the Lord, O you righteous ones;
praise is becoming to the upright. Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre;
Sing praises to Him with a harp of ten strings. Sing to Him a new song;
Play skillfully with a shout of joy. When we recognize that our very existence is the result
of His goodness, His love, His faithfulness, righteousness and justice, how can we not praise Him? Then, even more when we recognize that God’s love, righteousness and justice are not only demonstrated and displayed by creation, but as Romans 5:8 says:
God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. How can we not give thanks to the one who, though we were sinners, made us righteous in Himself. The plan of God for creation,
for our existence and for our future gives us hope and faith. In Jeremiah 1:5 God says: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you.” In Jeremiah 29:11 He
says: “I know the plans that I have for you, plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.” The same God who the psalmist says: By the word of the Lord the
heavens were made,And by the breath of His mouth all their host.For He spoke, and it was done;He commanded, and it stood fast; the same God who created the heavens and the earth with love according to His
good plan, also had and has a good plan for us. This life is not just a series of random accidents and incidents. We should not hopelessly wait on the next accident to occur. Romans 8:28-30 says: God causes all things to work together for good
to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among
many brethren; and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified. God doesn’t cause the hard and the difficult things that happen
in our lives. Some come as a result of the actions of fallen people, others because we live in a fallen world. But, if we will see God, if we will love Him in response to His love, demonstrated in the cross of Christ, if we will respond to His purpose and
His call, He will cause all things, all the good things and all the difficult things in our lives to work together for our good; that we might be conformed to the image of His Son. That too is what God planned in creation. Genesis 1:26-28 says: “Let Us
make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” God
created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over
the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast. The counsel of the Lord stands
forever,
The plans of His heart from generation to generation. Amen.
Thank You heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ and precious Holy Spirit, with the psalmist I will declare: Sing for joy in the Lord, O you righteous ones; Praise is becoming to the upright. Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre; Sing praises to Him with a harp of ten strings. Sing to Him a new song; Play skillfully with a shout of joy. For the word of the Lord is upright, And all His work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; The earth is full of the lovingkindness of the Lord. By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And by the breath of His mouth all their host. Amen.
