His lovingkindness is everlasting
Psalm 136 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible
Thanks for the Lord’s Goodness
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
2 Give
thanks to the God of gods,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
4 To Him who alone
does great wonders,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
5 To Him who made the heavens with skill,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
6 To Him who spread
out the earth above the waters,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
7 To Him who made the great lights,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting:
8 The sun
to rule by day,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
9 The moon and stars to rule by night,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
10 To Him who smote the
Egyptians in their firstborn,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
11 And brought Israel out from their midst,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
12 With a strong
hand and an outstretched arm,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
13 To Him who divided the Red Sea asunder,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
14 And made
Israel pass through the midst of it,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
15 But He overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the [i]Red
Sea,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
16 To Him who led His people through the wilderness,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
17 To Him who smote
great kings,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
18 And slew mighty kings,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting:
19 Sihon, king of the Amorites,
For
His lovingkindness is everlasting,
20 And Og, king of Bashan,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
21 And gave their land as a heritage,
For His lovingkindness
is everlasting,
22 Even a heritage to Israel His servant,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
23 Who remembered us in our low estate,
For His lovingkindness
is everlasting,
24 And has rescued us from our adversaries,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
25 Who gives food to all flesh,
For His lovingkindness is
everlasting.
26 Give thanks to the God of heaven,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
The psalmist says: Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, Give thanks to the God of gods, Give thanks to the Lord of lords, To Him who alone does great wonders, To Him who made the heavens with skill, To Him who spread out the earth above the waters, To Him who made the great lights, The sun to rule by day, The moon and stars to rule by night, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. We too should continually acknowledge who God is; that He is good and that He is the God of gods and the Lord of lords. We too should acknowledge the wonder, the splendor, the greatness, the magnitude and the intricacies of creation, how they are made with skill. If we acknowledged only that, the wonder and majesty of creation, we too would say: His lovingkindness is everlasting. Each day that everything continues in the exact manner necessary for life to continue, each day that the earth rotates precisely around the sun, while turning on its axis is a testament of the everlasting lovingkindness of God. To believe otherwise, to believe that all that we see in creation, the splendor and the majesty, the vastness and the intricacies; the perfect balance required to sustain one single life, let alone the life of every person, animal and plant could be the result of chance or of a series of random sequential events, each one fully dependant on the others is coincidence rather than the result of the everlasting lovingkindness of God is foolishness.
The psalmist continues:
To Him who smote the Egyptians in their firstborn,
And brought Israel out from their midst, With a strong hand and an outstretched arm, To Him who divided the Red
Sea asunder, And made Israel pass through the midst of it, But He overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea, To Him who led His people through the wilderness, To Him who smote
great kings, And slew mighty kings, Sihon, king of the Amorites,
And Og, king of Bashan, And gave their land as a heritage, Even a heritage to Israel His servant, For His lovingkindness
is everlasting. We too should remember and recount not only the things God has done for others, things recorded in scripture and things being testified of today; but also the things both great and small that He has done for us. We too will
say: His lovingkindness is everlasting. Just as the intricacies of creation are no less awesome and wonderful than its magnitude, so too are the little things God does for us as wonderful and as much of a testament of His everlasting lovingkindness
as the great and miraculous things He does. In Luke 12:6-7 Jesus says: “Are not five sparrows sold for two cents? Yet not one of them is forgotten before God. Indeed,
the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.” God knows us that intimately and He cares for us that deeply. There is nothing to great or difficult for Him and there
is nothing that affects us that is insignificant to Him. God is an extraordinary God who is also concerned with the ordinary. His lovingkindness is everlasting.
The psalmist says: Who remembered us in our low estate, And has rescued us from our adversaries, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. Our low estate is that we were sinners and our greatest adversary is the devil. The everlasting lovingkindness of God is that: God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. (John 3:16) 1 Peter 5:6-8 says: Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour. God has rescued us, from our adversary the devil, through the cross of Christ, because of His everlasting loving kindness. He cares for us, in both the great and small circumstances of our lives; in the ordinary and the extraordinary, His lovingkindness is everlasting. That should cause us to be humbled in His sight and under His mighty hand and to:
Give thanks to the God of heaven, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. Amen. Thank You heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ and precious Holy Spirit. You are God of gods, King
of kings and Lord of lords and Your lovingkindness is everlasting. Amen.
