I will give heed to the blameless way

Psalm 101 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

The Psalmist’s Profession of Uprightness.

I will sing of lovingkindness and justice,
To You, O Lord, I will sing praises.
I will give heed to the blameless way.
When will You come to me?
I will walk within my house in the integrity of my heart.
I will set no worthless thing before my eyes;
I hate the work of those who fall away;
It shall not fasten its grip on me.
A perverse heart shall depart from me;
I will know no evil.
Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will destroy;
No one who has a haughty look and an arrogant heart will I endure.

My eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me;
He who walks in a blameless way is the one who will minister to me.
He who practices deceit shall not dwell within my house;
He who speaks falsehood shall not maintain his position before me.
Every morning I will destroy all the wicked of the land,
So as to cut off from the city of the Lord all those who do iniquity.

The psalmist says:  I will give heed to the blameless way.  Isn’t that what it really amounts to? We have to choose the way we will go. Even Adam and Eve made a choice. They did not heed the blameless way. Adam blamed Eve. Eve blamed the serpent. Like the psalmist we should heed the blameless way.     In Deuteronomy 30:15-20 God says:  See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and adversity; in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that you may live and multiply, and that the Lord your God may bless you in the land where you are entering to possess it. But if your heart turns away and you will not obey, but are drawn away and worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall surely perish. You will not prolong your days in the land where you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess it.  I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, by loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him.  What or who we heed to will determine to what degree we enjoy the blessings of God. Some will say: that is Old Testament, Old Covenant we live under grace. We live under and in the blessing of Christ, not the law. Yes we do, but it is still important that we choose the right way, that we too heed the blameless way. In Matthew 7:13-14 Jesus says:  “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”  There are many wrong ways to go, but if we will choose to follow Christ, we will walk in the narrow way. In Christ we are blameless because He took all the blame for every sin on the cross.

To heed the blameless way is more than just a decision or choice that we make. The psalmist says:    I will walk within my house in the integrity of my heart. I will set no worthless thing before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; It shall not fasten its grip on me. A perverse heart shall depart from me; I will know no evil.   He says:   Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will destroy; No one who has a haughty look and an arrogant heart will I endure. My eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me; He who walks in a blameless way is the one who will minister to me. He who practices deceit shall not dwell within my house; He who speaks falsehood shall not maintain his position before me.
Every morning I will destroy all the wicked of the land, So as to cut off from the city of the Lord all those who do iniquity.   Of course it is not ours to actually destroy other people, but if we will heed the blameless way, we must choose daily, even all day every day to love what God loves and to despise what He hates. It is not enough to say that we will follow Jesus, we must heed the blameless way. In John 16:7-14 Jesus says:   I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;  concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.  Only if we daily, minute by minute, yield to the Holy Spirit can we fully walk in the blameless way.

I will sing of lovingkindness and justice, To You, O Lord, I will sing praises. Thank You heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ and precious Holy Spirit. You have told us the way. You are the way and You guide us in the way.   Amen.
