Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.

Psalm 33:12-22 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance.

13 The Lord looks from heaven;
He sees all the sons of men;
14 From His dwelling place He looks out
On all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 He who fashions the hearts of them all,
He who understands all their works.
16 The king is not saved by a mighty army;
A warrior is not delivered by great strength.
17 A horse is a false hope for victory;
Nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength.

18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
On those who hope for His lovingkindness,
19 To deliver their soul from death
And to keep them alive in famine.
20 Our soul waits for the Lord;
He is our help and our shield.
21 For our heart rejoices in Him,
Because we trust in His holy name.
22 Let Your lovingkindness, O Lord, be upon us,
According as we have hoped in You.

The psalmist says:  Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.    In truth, God is God, the blessing comes when we acknowledge Him as Lord. When God created us with a free will, an ability to choose for ourselves what we will do, it included a free will to choose whether or not we will make Him our Lord. He is still God, even if we do not make Him Lord. Our choice does not impact or negate God’s omnipotence or His omniscience. Our choice not to make Him Lord does not change the fact that He is the eternal, infinite and omnipresent God. All we choose when we choose whether God is our Lord, is whether or not we will be blessed.

The psalmist says: Blessed…  The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance.  Before we can choose Him, He first chose us. We often speak of the inheritance we have from God, in Christ our Lord. Do we realize though that we are chosen to be God’s inheritance? For an  inheritance to take place, there must be a death. It is through the death that the promise and the blessings, the riches and the benefits are passed on. God does not die that we inherit and we do not die that we become His inheritance. Our inheritance from Him and our becoming His inheritance are both facilitated through the death of Christ on the cross. Romans 8:17 says we are:  heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.    At the same time, we are reconciled to God, we become His, through the same death on the cross. 1 Peter 2:9 says:  You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

The psalmist says:  The Lord looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men; From His dwelling place He looks out On all the inhabitants of the earth, He who fashions the hearts of them all, He who understands all their works. The king is not saved by a mighty army; A warrior is not delivered by great strength. A horse is a false hope for victory; Nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength.    God knows and understands us. He created us; He fashioned our hearts. There are many things we can put our trust and confidence in apart from God. We can choose to trust our own strength or to rely on the things we have. We can choose to trust and place our confidence in other people or other things. We can choose to make any number of things Lord in our lives and still God sees and understands each one of us. The psalmist says:  Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, On those who hope for His lovingkindness, To deliver their soul from death And to keep them alive in famine. Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. For our heart rejoices in Him, Because we trust in His holy name. Let Your lovingkindness, O Lord, be upon us, According as we have hoped in You.

Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ; precious Holy Spirit; it is beyond my understanding that You, the omnipotent, omniscient, eternal, infinite ever present God, would have chosen me. Because You did, because You first loved and chose me, I choose to call You and make You Lord. Thank You that through the cross of Christ, I am Your inheritance and I also receive the full inheritance of Your blessings; Your promises and everlasting lovingkindness. I am saved from death having received eternal life and I have been given the blessing of abundant life in Christ my Lord.    Amen.
