The Righteous and the Wicked Contrasted.
Psalm 1 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible
The Righteous and the Wicked Contrasted.
How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water,
Which
yields its fruit in its season
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.
4 The wicked are not so,
But they are like chaff which the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the wicked
will not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the wicked will perish.
Acts 13:22 says: He (God) raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do all My will.’ In today’s text, David, with a heart after God’s heart, contrasts the outcome for the righteous and the wicked. The righteous will be blessed, but the way of the wicked will perish. To confirm that this is not Old Testament; Old Covenant thinking or doctrine, Jesus Himself, who says: "I and the Father are one." (John 10:30) and “I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak.” (John 12:49) also says: “Whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:19) and “Not everyone who says to Me,‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he whodoes the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have wenot prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’Andthen I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you;depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” (Matthew 7:21-23) and “Just as the tares are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.” (Matthew 13:40-43) Neither God’s view of sin nor the consequences of it and for it where changed under the New Covenant of grace through Christ. Jesus did not die on the cross to redeem sin. He died on the cross to redeem sinners. Just as God says: Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! In Isaiah 5:20, in Revelation 21:5-8 the Lord says: “Behold, I am making all things new… It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son. But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
In Deuteronomy 11:26-28 God says: See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, which I am commanding you today; and the curse, if you do not listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I am commanding you today, by following other gods which you have not known. In Deuteronomy 30:15-20 He says: See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and adversity; in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that you may live and multiply, and that the Lord your God may bless you in the land where you are entering to possess it. But if your heart turns away and you will not obey, but are drawn away and worship other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall surely perish… I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, by loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him. In Revelation 3:20-22 the Lord says: “Behold,I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door,I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.To him who overcomesI will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says.”
The psalmist says: How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand
in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does
not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, But they are like chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the
righteous, But the way of the wicked will perish. 2 Peter 3:9 says: The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come
to repentance. Jesus came to die for our sins, that by grace we would be redeemed. He is coming again to judge sin and unrighteousness. All that is left is the Lord’s waiting, His longsuffering patience toward us, His standing
at the door and knocking. Choose today the blessing or the curse, life or death. God has not changed His view of sin and unrighteousness, but through the cross we can be changed, made new and be seen by God in Christ’s righteousness.
Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus Christ; precious Holy Spirit; thank You that You do not change. There is no end to Your requirement of righteousness nor is there an end to Your love and grace. I choose the blessing of obedience through Christ. Amen.
