We have an abundant inheritance and prosperity in Christ

Psalm 37 from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

Do not fret because of evildoers, Be not envious toward wrongdoers.
For they will wither quickly like the grass And fade like the green herb.
Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light And your judgment as the noonday.

Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.
Cease from anger and forsake wrath; Do not fret; it leads only to evildoing.
For evildoers will be cut off, But those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land.
10 Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more; And you will look carefully for his place and he will not be there. 11 But the humble will inherit the land And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.

12 The wicked plots against the righteous And gnashes at him with his teeth.
13 The Lord laughs at him, For He sees his day is coming. 14 The wicked have drawn the sword and bent their bow To cast down the afflicted and the needy, To slay those who are upright in conduct. 15 Their sword will enter their own heart, And their bows will be broken.

16 Better is the little of the righteous Than the abundance of many wicked.
17 For the arms of the wicked will be broken, But the Lord sustains the righteous.
18 The Lord knows the days of the blameless, And their inheritance will be forever.
19 They will not be ashamed in the time of evil, And in the days of famine they will have abundance. 20 But the wicked will perish; And the enemies of the Lord will be like the glory of the pastures, They vanish—like smoke they vanish away. 21 The wicked borrows and does not pay back, But the righteous is gracious and gives. 22 For those blessed by Him will inherit the land, But those cursed by Him will be cut off.

23 The steps of a man are established by the Lord, And He delights in his way.
24 When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong, Because the Lord is the One who holds his hand. 25 I have been young and now I am old, Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken
Or his descendants begging bread. 26 All day long he is gracious and lends, And his descendants are a blessing.

27 Depart from evil and do good, So you will abide forever. 28 For the Lord loves justice
And does not forsake His godly ones; They are preserved forever, But the descendants of the wicked will be cut off. 29 The righteous will inherit the land And dwell in it forever.
30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, And his tongue speaks justice.
31 The law of his God is in his heart; His steps do not slip. 32 The wicked spies upon the righteous
And seeks to kill him. 33 The Lord will not leave him in his hand Or let him be condemned when he is judged. 34 Wait for the Lord and keep His way, And He will exalt you to inherit the land;
When the wicked are cut off, you will see it. 35 I have seen a wicked, violent man Spreading himself like a luxuriant tree in its native soil. 36 Then he passed away, and lo, he was no more;
I sought for him, but he could not be found. 37 Mark the blameless man, and behold the upright;
For the man of peace will have a posterity. 38 But transgressors will be altogether destroyed; The posterity of the wicked will be cut off. 39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; He is their strength in time of trouble. 40 The Lord helps them and delivers them; He delivers them from the wicked and saves them, Because they take refuge in Him.

Throughout Psalm 37 we see that the psalmist understands that what we see and experience here in this natural physical realm is not necessarily the same as what is in God’s kingdom. He says:  Depart from evil and do good, So you will abide forever. For the Lord loves justice
And does not forsake His godly ones; They are preserved forever, But the descendants of the wicked will be cut off. The righteous will inherit the land And dwell in it forever.
     Many people live their entire lives here on earth and their circumstances change very little. Some are born poor; without high human standing and die in that same condition, others are born into riches and power and hold those things throughout their lives. David, the psalmist, knew the extremes of earthly circumstances. He started as a humble shepherd, rose to become king, was removed from his position by his own son and later restored. He openly challenged the giant Goliath and defeated him; and he hid in caves from his enemies. The psalmist knew that more important than what he experienced here, was his relationship with God, his standing in the kingdom of heaven.  He says:  The steps of a man are established by the Lord, And He delights in his way. When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong, Because the Lord is the One who holds his hand.      The psalmist was so secure in God and in his position in the heavenly kingdom that in another psalm, Psalm 23, he writes:  Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me.     Focused on his relationship with God, on God’s abiding presence with him, death, the end of life and existence in the temporal, physical realm is merely a shadow. It has no substance. Death has no lasting power over those who are with God. The inheritance of the righteous is more than anything this earthly realm can offer.

At the beginning of the psalm, David says:   Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, and He will do it.     Faithfulness does not come naturally. Romans 3:23 says:  All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.   In Psalm 14:2-3, David says:   The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man,    to see if there are any who understand,  who seek after God. hey have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good,  not even one.      So faithfulness is not natural, it must be cultivated. We cultivate our faithfulness to God as we increase our faith in Him. Our faith is increased as we delight ourselves in Him. As we make God our focus, as we delight ourselves in Him, delighting in His presence, delighting in fellowship and communion with Him, as we worship Him and meditate on His goodness our faith is increased. He gives us the desires of our heart because our hearts become aligned with His. Jesus says: "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33) When we commit our way to the Lord, trusting in Him, when we make Him and His kingdom our priority our faith is increased because in God we have all that we want. Our faithfulness is increased because all we want is God.

The psalmist says:     Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more; And you will look carefully for his place and he will not be there. But the humble will inherit the land And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.     Jesus says:  The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)   In truth anything that distracts us from our focus of delighting in God is a thief. Anything that takes priority in our lives above God steals, kills and destroys us. The abundant life that Jesus came to give, the abundant prosperity and inheritance we have in God is as Paul saysall who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. (Romans 8:14-17)   We may indeed experience some suffering in this world, as Christ Himself did, but as His joint heirs, as children of God, we already possess all that there is in the kingdom of heaven. From the beginning of His ministry here on earth, Jesus message was: The kingdom of heaven is at hand. As His disciples, that’s what we are to bring to the world, all the goodness, the abundance and prosperity of the kingdom of heaven here on earth. That’s why He taught us to pray:

Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.   Amen.
