By faith we understand...

Hebrews 11:1-16 (NASB) from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

The Triumphs of Faith

11 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval.

By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible. By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained the testimony that he was righteous, God testifying about his gifts, and through faith, though he is dead, he still speaks. By faith Enoch was taken up so that he would not see death; and he was not found because God took him up; for he obtained the witness that before his being taken up he was pleasing to God. And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise; 10 for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11 By faith even Sarah herself received ability to conceive, even beyond the proper time of life, since she considered Him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore there was born even of one man, and him as good as dead at that, as many descendants as the stars of heaven in number, and innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.

13 All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own. 15 And indeed if they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.

God has prepared a city for them. That city is prepared for us as well if we too will walk by faith. Revelation 21 gives us a description of the city of promise.     Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away… 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God. Her brilliance was like a very costly stone, as a stone of crystal-clear jasper… 18 The material of the wall was jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. 19 The foundation stones of the city wall were adorned with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation stone was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, emerald; 20 the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst. 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

22 I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. 25 In the daytime (for there will be no night there) its gates will never be closed; 26 and they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it; 27 and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Human words can never fully describe the things of God and heaven. We are only able to compare the heavenly things to the things we already know. The human mind, even with all of our knowledge can only know and understand a small percentage of all there is to know about the universe and all of creation. When science encounters things it cannot explain it creates theories, man conceived ideas of how things might be. On the other hand when a believer encounters the unexplainable, he by faith credits it to God. Scientific theories are constantly changing, as new knowledge often makes old beliefs obsolete and foolish. Remember it was science that once believed the world was flat. It was science that once believed the sun revolved around the earth. If we look at the history of medical science we find that it wasn’t until 1847 that doctors understood the importance of washing their hands after surgery. Scientific theory constantly changes and evolves and that is a good thing. Science though still tries to explain and understand the infinite, eternal, omnipotent God in finite human terms and understanding or because they cannot explain or understand God in human terms, they deny God and believe an unproved man conceived theory. . In truth it requires much more faith to believe all that those who deny God and creation believe. The very basis of their theory of the big bang is in conflict with the fundamental scientific understanding of entropy; that all things tend naturally to go from order to disorder.

As for me, I am quite content to admit that I don’t understand and can’t explain everything. When I encounter those unexplainable things beyond my comprehension I will rely on faith. I will trust the unchangeable God rather than the ever changing opinions of men. Those who are critical of believers will say that faith in God comes from a human weakness. The truth is faith in God is not a human thing it is a spiritual thing. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17)   But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. (John 14:26) Each person must choose what he will believe without seeing, whether to trust the ever changing ideas of men or the unchanging truth of God.

For us who believe, who are content to yield to the Spirit, we look forward to the promise of God just as all those who died in faith. But if we yield to the Spirit for understanding and faith;

 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. (Galatians 5)

Amen. Thank You Father God, Lord Jesus and Holy Spirit for Your revelation of truth. I believe. Amen.
