In these last days has spoken to us in His Son

Hebrews 1 (NASB) from the daily reading in the One Year Bible

God’s Final Word in His Son

God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.

For to which of the angels did He ever say, “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”? And again, “I will be a Father to Him And He shall be a Son to Me”? And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, “And let all the angels of God worship Him.” And of the angels He says, “Who makes His angels winds, And His ministers a flame of fire.” But of the Son He says,  “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, And the righteous scepter is the scepter of His kingdom. “You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness above Your companions.” 10 And, “You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are  the works of Your hands; 11 They will perish, but You remain; And they all will become old like a garment, 12 And like a mantle You will roll them up; Like a garment they will also be changed. But You are the same, And Your years will not come to an end.” 13 But to which of the angels has He ever said, “Sit at My right hand, Until I make Your enemies A footstool for Your feet”? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?

Jesus Christ, the Son of God is one with God. Today’s text says: , in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are  the works of Your hands.   Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness (Genesis 1:26)  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.(John 1:1-3) Jesus says of Himself: "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end." (Revelation 22:13) Today’s text also agrees that Jesus is eternal like the Father. 11 They will perish, but You remain; And they all will become old like a garment, 12 And like a mantle You will roll them up; Like a garment they will also be changed. But You are the same, And Your years will not come to an end.”   Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)

Yet Jesus, fully God: did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:7-8) Jesus Christ, God in flesh paid the price for the sin of all mankind. What looked like His final defeat, His death on the cross, was God’s plan for victory.  The text says:  When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high…, “Sit at My right hand, Until I make Your enemies A footstool for Your feet”    at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:10-11)   We too share in Christ’s victory over His enemies and over sin and death.  1 Corinthians 15:55-57 says:  O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; 57 but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.  In Matthew 16:18-19,  Jesus says: I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”

I find it ironic that doubters will say that we as believers cannot use the word of God to prove and validate God’s word and His truth. Yet those same skeptics will rely on the words of men and the theories of men to justify, validate and “prove” the theories and philosophies of men. Man’s theories and philosophies change according to the whims of men. It is science who wrongly once thought the earth was flat and that the sun revolved around the earth. Man uses theories to explain what he does not understand. Today there are theories about climate change, there are theories about the origin of man and the world, there are theories about human behavior. These are all things man does not fully understand, so he needs to make a choice. He can acknowledge that some things are beyond his understanding or he can create theories and ever changing philosophies to try to explain what he does not know.

The word of God is consistent. From Genesis to Revelation, it tells the story of God’s creation, man’s fall and God’s plan to redeem and restore all that was lost in the fall. Throughout the Psalms there is an acknowledgement that we can neither understand or even see the full glory of God or the magnitude of His creation. If science will be honest, it will admit that the more it learns the more it finds that it cannot explain, understand or comprehend. Whether things about the earth, things about the heavens or things about man himself, science has limited knowledge and understanding.

As believers though, in and through Christ, we are made to be like Him. We are to be one with God. We are not equal in knowledge but by faith we are one in the Spirit. In John 17, Jesus prays to the Father saying:  As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth. 20 “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; 21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; 23 I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

25 “O righteous Father, although the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me; 26 and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

As believers we may never fully understand all that we have been given and all that we have in Christ. But Jesus says: Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.(John 14:12) He says:  Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you.(Mark 11:24) We need not understand all that God enables us to do. We need to believe, to lean not on our own understanding, to not theorize about the things we cannot explain, but rather to trust fully in Him.

God the Father, Jesus Christ His Son and the Holy Spirit are eternal, omnipotent and omniscient, as believers through faith in Christ and His cross we are one with them.

Thank You God, beyond all human comprehension, I believe and I receive all that You are and all that You have for me.    Amen.
