There will be no end to the increase of His government...
Isaiah 9:1-7 (NASB) from the daily reading in the One Year Bible
Birth and Reign of the Prince of Peace
But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.
2 The people who walk in darkness
Will see
a great light;
Those who live in a dark land,
The light will shine on them.
3 You shall multiply the nation,
You shall increase their gladness;
They will be glad in Your presence
As with the gladness of harvest,
As men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
4 For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,
The rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian.
5 For every boot of the
booted warrior in the battle tumult,
And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
On the throne of David and over his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.
As I read these prophetic words regarding the coming of Christ and the establishment of His kingdom, His eternal kingdom, I can’t help but to think of the difference between God’s kingdom and the many kingdoms of men which have risen and fallen throughout history. On this day in particular, as we remember the image of the World Trade Center Towers burning and then falling, I think of how great and powerful nations rise and fall. Many nations have held the position of most powerful on earth, that position usually lasts no more than a few hundred years at best, then either from within or from without the once great nation begins to crumble and fall.
God’s kingdom is different. The prophecy says: For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. Every nation or kingdom has enemies. The difference is that with God’s kingdom His enemy has already been defeated. Colossians 2:15 speaks of Jesus victory saying: When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them… What the enemy of Christ thought was his greatest and final victory was turned instead into the greatest and eternal victory of the kingdom of God, on behalf of all mankind. Through the cross of Christ and His resurrection from death, we are redeemed and restored to live eternally with God.
Because God’s kingdom is not like the kingdoms of men, it is spiritual in nature. John 18:36 says: Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.” Because the kingdom is established in the heavenly realm some doubt and deny it’s existence, calling God and Christ a myth or fairy tale. Even in this present culture which struggles to separate fantasy and fiction from reality, no one can deny the truth of what was written in the essay, “One Solitary Life”.
One Solitary Life
(the original version by Dr James Allan Francis)
Let us turn now to the story. A child is born in an obscure village. He is brought up in another obscure
village. He works in a carpenter shop until he is thirty, and then for three brief years is an itinerant preacher, proclaiming a message and living a life. He never writes a book. He never holds an office. He never raises an army. He never has a family of
his own. He never owns a home. He never goes to college. He never travels two hundred miles from the place where he was born. He gathers a little group of friends about him and teaches them his way of life. While still a young man, the tide of popular feeling
turns against him. One denies him; another betrays him. He is turned over to his enemies. He goes through the mockery of a trial; he is nailed to a cross between two thieves, and when dead is laid in a borrowed grave by the kindness of a friend.
Those are the facts of his human life. He rises from the dead. Today we look back across nineteen hundred years and ask, What kind of trail has he left across the centuries? When we try to sum up his influence, all the armies that ever marched, all the
parliaments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned are absolutely picayune in their influence on mankind compared with that of this one solitary life…
Fantasies and fairy tales don’t have the impact and influence on the world that Jesus Christ has had.
Today as we remember the frailty and temporary nature of even the greatest accomplishments and governments of man. May we also remember or perhaps understand for the first time the truth of what Jesus says:
"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty." (Revelation 1:8)
And He who sits on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new." And He said, "Write, for these words are faithful and true." 6Then He said to me, "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. 7"He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.…(Revelation 21:5-7)
"Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done. 13"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end." (Revelation 22:12-13)
And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore.
Revelation 22 continues: The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.
18 I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.
20 He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming quickly.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.
Amen. So be it.
