For unto us a child is born... Let earth receive her King!

Isaiah 9:6-7

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
On the throne of David and over his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.

This prophetic scripture declaring the coming  of a new king to rule was written 700-800 years before the birth of Jesus Christ. It is one of the many Old Testament prophecies fulfilled in Jesus. What I want to pay attention to today is the fact that this declaration is of one who is coming to rule, it speaks of His government and His kingdom. That is a large part of why many of the Jewish people missed the coming of Jesus as their Messiah. They were looking for and expecting a warrior, a king who would deliver them from the political bondage and oppression they were experiencing at the hand of the Roman rulers. Jesus came with a message and a mission of spiritual deliverence. He came to free His people, both Jews and Gentiles from the bondage of an even more oppressive ruler, sin and death.

We who have experienced the grace of God through Jesus mission of deliverence and redemption need to remember that He did in fact come to rule. This familiar account in Matthew 2 confirms what the prophet Isaiah spoke of.

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet:

And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah,
Are by no means least among the leaders of Judah;
For out of you shall come forth a Ruler
Who will shepherd My people Israel.’”

Jesus was born to be king. He was born to establish His kingdom, a kingdom with no end. As we celebrate the birth of our redeemer and savior Jesus Christ, we need to remember that He is Lord of lords and King of kings. When He returns it will neither be as a baby or a humble shepherd and servant. Jesus will return as a conquering King and eternal ruler. Think of that when you hear or sing this familar song.

Joy to the World

Joy to The world! the Lord has come
Let earth receive her King
Let ev'ry heart prepare him room
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing

Joy to the world! the Savior reigns
Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy

He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonder wonders of His love

One final thought from our text in Isaiah. It says "the government will rest on His shoulders". How does this ruling governing aspect of our Lord Jesus affect us now? Let's look again at one of what I consider to be the foundational scriptures for the church today. Matthew 16:

 15 He *said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”

The word church in this text is the Greek word ekklésia, Phonetic Spelling: (ek-klay-see'-ah). It means to be a group or assembly which is called out. It has a political purpose or meaning to this calling out. The ekklesia, and so the church today is called out to rule and govern along with Jesus, establishing His kingdom now and forever. That's why the One on who's shoulders the government rests builds His church on the revelation that He is the Christ,  and gives us the keys to the kingdom of heaven. We are to use the authority He has given us to loose and bind, that things on earth will be as they are in heaven.

He was born as a baby, but He is the  King. He came to deliver, save and redeem us so that we might rule with Him.

For unto us a child is born... Let earth receive her King!
