My way or the High way. God's plan is better.
Genesis 12
Now the Lord said to Abram,
“Go forth from your country,
And from your relatives
And from your father’s house,
To the land which I will show you;
2 And I will make you a great nation,
And I will bless you,
And make your name great;
And so you shall be a blessing;
3 And I will bless those who bless you,
And the one who curses you I will curse.
And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
4 So Abram went forth as the Lord had spoken to him;
I can't help but to think about God's call to Abraham and Abraham's response as I respond to the things God calls me to. So often we have a need for much more information and detail than God gives us. We want to know all steps and turns before we set out.
I'm kind of old school or actually technologically challenged when I go on a trip I print out the directions on mapquest so that I know each turn and distance that will be part of my journey. Many other people use a GPS when taking a trip. They set out knowing only where they are beginning and must trust the device to guide them on the proper course. My way works most of the time, but problems arise when there is an unexpected detour. I am left with no way to get back on course. There are other times that the street names are either different or not marked at all leaving me to guess which way I should go. The GPS will redirect the user if something comes up to change the course and gives real time instruction as things develope and change.
God wants us to trust Him both with the plan and the course. Abraham was not given much information but we read in the passage that he went forth as the Lord had spoken. God's call to Abraham (the text says Abram, his name before God changed it) is that he will be both blessed and a blessing. In the same way God has a call and a purpose for each of us. Part of that involves how God will bless us. The other part is how He wants to use us to be a blessing to His people. God doesn't need any of us, but He has chosen to work through us. Psalm 115:16 says: 16 The heavens are the heavens of the Lord, But the earth He has given to the sons of men.
He has determined to complete His work here through us. He looks for people who will trust Him. He gives us the Holy Spirit to be our guide. Much like that GPS the Holy Spirit is able to take us turn by turn and step by step, adjusting our path as detours arise. How often when we print out the complete direction do we also begin to question and possibly adjust the route, believing we know a better way. That's why God wants us to trust Him day by day, step by step, so our plans will not override His plan. Isaiah 55:8-9 explains why we should trust God with the plan.
Isaiah 55:8-9 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord.
9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways
And
My thoughts than your thoughts
God has a plan for each one of us. A plan to bless us and a plan for us to be a blessing. In order for us to walk in all that God has for us, both the personal and kingdom blessings, He needs us to trust Him. To be willing to say yes Lord, Thy will be done. It's not wrong to plan for the future but the best plan for our future is His plan.
God is calling as He did to Abraham. He wants us to trust Him and His plan. To walk with Him day by day and step by step. Learning to hear His voice and trusting the leading of the Holy Spirit. If we will say yes Lord and like Abraham go forth as the Lord has spoken we will be both blessed and a blessing.
Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit, thank You that Your ways are higher than my ways and Your thoughts are higher than my thoughts. Thank You that while You don't need me to accomplish Your purpose and plan, You have chosen to include me and use me. Today I say yes Lord. Yes to your plan and yes to the direction that You have for this day. Yes Lord.
